Arts For Health’s Arts on Prescription project aims to improve participants’ health and wellbeing and address the growing health inequalities which exist in Milton Keynes. We aim that participation will improve clients overall health and well being, leading to a decrease in need for GP surgery appointments, medication and in-patient visits.
The programme of arts activities is available on a referral basis for clients with mild to moderate mental health conditions (depression, stress and anxiety) receiving health care in the community. Workshops are socially orientated small groups of up to 15 clients led by an artist experienced in working in mental healthcare. The programme is structured 10 week x 2 hour series of activities. On completion of the ten week programme participants are invited to join an ongoing Art Group.
The first year of the Arts on Prescription project was evaluated by Willis Newson. The evaluation identifies that introducing participants to art skills and techniques helped to build self-esteem, increase confidence and contribute to improved relationships with others. Participants told us that the impacts of these changes included an enhanced sense of personal and mental wellbeing, greater confidence, an increased desire to engage in outside activities and an ongoing engagement with art.
